Life After Life - Kate Atkinson Very interesting premise and written with her normal brilliance and some amazing descriptions of life in the blitz. Still somehow less satisfying than her previous novels.
Bedlam - Christopher Brookmyre Not sure I liked the Scifi element in this book, quite apart from the fact that I have never gamed in my life, so that a lot of the book went way over my head. Hope he goes back to his normal genre for the next book.
The Woman Who Wouldn't Die - Colin Cotterill Ridiculous, joyful fun
Billy Budd, Sailor (Enriched Classics) - Herman Melville Not for me...
Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry - Rachel Joyce Delightful.
Boris Godunov - Alexander Pushkin Saw it in Stratford - without doubt better performed than read!

Orders from Berlin

Orders from Berlin - Simon Tolkien Ok, bit too much padding, rather too many stereotypical characters for my liking and difficult to create tension when you know the ending...
The Shining - Stephen King Does as it says on the box - gave me nightmares as a child.
Breakfast at Tiffany's and Three Stories - Truman Capote Not as much fun as the film, but much darker and more thought-provoking
Tess of the d'Urbervilles - Thomas Hardy, Tim Dolin, Margaret R. Higonnet I have always hated Hardyesqe-style coincidences - letters under door mats for instance. Also I have always felt that if any of his characters made the common sense decision they wouldn't get into the scrapes they do.
Persuasion - Jane Austen Not my favourite, but I still adore her social observations and wonderful wit.
The Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien Not my style...
The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien Tried as a teenager and again as an adult - not to my taste
Ratlines - Stuart Neville Really enjoyed this. Great idea for a novel, although had to skip the torture scenes...
Doctor Zhivago - Boris Pasternak, Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky Better in many ways than I remembered, but I forgot what a wanker Zhivago is...
The Reluctant Spy - John Dryden I enjoyed this except for the lack of motivation behind what he did - was it really just for lust?
