Perfect - Rachel Joyce I think this was a 3 and a half bug because I enjoyed Harold fry so much it goes to a four. I loved the story of the boys as youngsters more than the story of when they are older, it just didn't seem to grip me, but the character of the bullied mother was brilliant.
It's All Greek to Me - Charlotte Higgins For anyone anywhere who has an interest in Ancient Greece, this accessible, clear, fascinating, easily readable book is a must read.
Sisterland - Curtis Sittenfeld Unlike her other books, I never cared enough about the characters, too caricatured. Basically i felt it was a rather pedestrian domestic drama that just about managed to hold my attention until the end.
Jerusalem: The Biography - Simon Sebag Montefiore A brilliant explanation of the mess Jerusalem finds itself in. Loved this
The Dogs and the Wolves - Irene Nemirovsky Very disappointing. Being a child (great, great grandchild) of immigrants who escaped from the Ukrainian pogroms I was full of hope... Tyhe characters never really developed from one-dimensional set pieces.
An Englishman Aboard: Discovering France in a Rowing Boat - Charles Timoney This smacks of "Lets think of something I can do, so I can then write a book about it."
Americanah - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie I love the way that Adiche populates her books with characters rather than stereotypes. All her books have given me a new insight into what life is like for ordinary Nigerians. I love her writing, her insights and honesty.
Tea Time for the Traditionally Built - Alexander McCall Smith undemanding fun
The Tempest - William Shakespeare Ridiculous but sublime
The Leopard - Archibald Colquhoun, Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa Beautifully written but just didn't grip me.
Volume I, Heroides. Amores (Loeb Classical Library) - Ovid, Grant Showerman (Translator), Revised by G. P. Goold Brilliant

Volume VII: The Verrine Orations, Volume I: Against Caecilius. Against Verres, Part 1; Part 2, Books 1-2 (Loeb Classical Library)

The Verrine Orations 1: Against Caecilus. Against Verres, Parts 1-2; Books 1-2 - Cicero, Leonard Hugh Graham Greenwood The original - and still the best...

Noah

Tentação - Adolfo Caminha This made me smile in the middle of the day. Thank you Bettie xx
Before the Fact - Francis Iles Really loved this. Didn't know whether to be infuriated by her inability to go and tell him to take a hike or understanding. Definitely psychologically convincing.

Speaking From Among the Bones: A Flavia de Luce Novel - Alan Bradley My guilty Easter pleasure...
Instructions for a Heatwave - Maggie O'Farrell I love Maggie O'Farrells books - but not this one. Too many stereotyped characters centred around a 'typical' Irish family. Just not interested.
