I think this was a 3 and a half bug because I enjoyed Harold fry so much it goes to a four. I loved the story of the boys as youngsters more than the story of when they are older, it just didn't seem to grip me, but the character of the bullied mother was brilliant.
Unlike her other books, I never cared enough about the characters, too caricatured. Basically i felt it was a rather pedestrian domestic drama that just about managed to hold my attention until the end.
Very disappointing. Being a child (great, great grandchild) of immigrants who escaped from the Ukrainian pogroms I was full of hope... Tyhe characters never really developed from one-dimensional set pieces.
I love the way that Adiche populates her books with characters rather than stereotypes. All her books have given me a new insight into what life is like for ordinary Nigerians. I love her writing, her insights and honesty.
Really loved this. Didn't know whether to be infuriated by her inability to go and tell him to take a hike or understanding. Definitely psychologically convincing.
