Tess of the d'Urbervilles - Thomas Hardy, Tim Dolin, Margaret R. Higonnet I have always hated Hardyesqe-style coincidences - letters under door mats for instance. Also I have always felt that if any of his characters made the common sense decision they wouldn't get into the scrapes they do.
